Kani Villaflor, a 4th Year Film student at MINT College got Logro into the Short Film Corner of the Festival de Cannes 2018. In May, he will be flying out to Cannes, France to participate in the festival’s programs.
Logro is Villaflor's thesis film that follows the story of Bruno, a person with dwarfism. Unsatisfied with his work, salary, and treatment, he joins an underground fight club to earn his way to the prize money and in the hopes of reaching his aspirations.
Villaflor shares that Logro came from his fascination with a bar in Makati that features little people who fight in the ring. He wanted to create a documentary film about the fighters’ stories but didn’t get the chance to because of the strict policies of the bar. He then decided to store the idea for later.
Now a 4th Year Film major, he took the chance to bring the idea to life by using it for his thesis film, “I started to do my research. I immersed. I gathered stories, [and] just developed a script.”
Asked about how it feels to have his film in the Short Film Corner, Villaflor says that it’s still a thought that’s yet to sink into him, “Until now I can’t fully comprehend that it got into the corner. In my head, ever since I started to learn about film more and more, Cannes has always been this long shot of an idea to get into.”
The Short Film Corner, or Cannes Court Metrage, is organized by Festival de Cannes as a meeting place for filmmakers. Villaflor will have a chance to present his film, attend workshops, participate in themed conferences, and join round table discussions.
