For this year’s #HimigHandog2017, Star Music has taken a radically different approach by fielding music video entries from colleges and universities across the nation. As the grand prize winner for the MYX Choice for Best Music Video 2016, MINT College was the only school chosen from Metro Manila.
The annual songwriting competition by Star Music and ABS-CBN has welcomed MINT College as a participant ever since its revival in 2013. Every year, they tap into the talents of students in the Philippines to make music videos for the chosen songs. In the previous years, MINT students directed music videos for Pwede Bang Ako Na Lang Ulit by Bugoy Drilon, Fallen by Marion Aunor, and Bumabalik ang Nagdaan by Jessa Zaragoza. In 2016, MINT emerged as the MYX Choice for Best Music Video for O, Pag-ibig by Ylona Garcia and Bailey May.
MINT produced the music video for Tayo Na Lang Kasi, which was composed by Soc Villanueva, and interpreted by Kyla and Jason Dy. It is co-directed by Joyce Ching and Princess Asuncion, who are both senior Film students. Both describe the experience as “enjoyably tiring.” Joyce said that there was a lot of pressure involved, “Whatever we’re coming up with will be the official music video of the song. But I’m super grateful that Star Music gives opportunities to students, and that MINT is very involved and excited to grab these opportunities for their students.”
Princess also shared how the music video is already a success on its own, “It was made by people who are genuinely passionate about their craft. The whole production was done out of passion, not out of responsibility. What more can beat that?”
MINT College is competing against participating schools from Olongapo, Laguna, Quezon Province, Bulacan, Pampanga, Batangas, Baguio, Bataan, and Cebu. The winning school will take home Php 50,000.00 for the MYX Choice for Best Music Video Award.
The Top 10 Music Videos will be released on November 4, 8:00AM on MYX Channel.
